The American Bar Association says Judge Amy Coney Barrett is well qualified to serve on the Supreme Court.

The group says their rating is based on “the characteristics of integrity, professionalism and legal temperament,” according to US News.

The status “well qualified” was not unanimous. The letter said a majority of the ABA’s Standing Committee on Federal Justice found that Barrett was “well qualified.” A minority believe that Barrett is “qualified” to serve.

What is the American Bar Association?

The American Bar Association (ABA) is a voluntary association of American attorneys and judges. The ABA was founded in 1878 and had about 375,000 members by the end of the 20th century. The headquarters are in Chicago, Illinois.

For the past 67 years, the ABA Standing Committee on Federal Justice has conducted extensive peer reviews of the professional qualifications of federal court candidates, including all 34 candidates for the US Supreme Court.

In a statement, the ABA said: “While it is important to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court in a timely manner, the Senate deliberation and approval process must allow sufficient time for a thorough consideration of Barrett’s appointment and not be rushed for party political considerations. “

What is the next step in the nomination process?

Says the ABA, “Following the appointment of Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court today, the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Federal Justice will begin its independent, impartial assessment of the candidate immediately.”

“The ABA Standing Committee will act as soon as possible to complete this process thoroughly and fairly.”

The Republican-controlled Senate is attacking President Donald Trump’s election to replace the late Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg and to secure a conservative court majority ahead of election day.
