The shocking truth about Australia’s behavior in Afghanistan was finally revealed when the long-awaited Brereton report on suspected war crimes by special forces soldiers was released.

Defense chief Angus Campbell described the alleged unlawful killings as a result of a toxic culture of “ego, elitism and pretension” in which “patrols took control of the law, broken rules, made up stories, told lies and killed prisoners”.

The saga is far from over. A special prosecutor will take the next steps to indict Australian troops over incidents over a decade.
