The Honorable James L. Buckley made observations at the National Review Institute’s 2019 Ideas Summit in Washington, DC Buckley’s words are a sobering reminder of the immense task that lies ahead.
ONEt At this critical time for our nation, we must be inspired by those who subscribe to the first principles and preservation of our great American experiment.
Earlier this fall, the National Review Institute hosted the William F. Buckley Jr. Prize Dinner Gala at home honor two great Americans – The Honorable James L. Buckley and Virginia James – for their advocacy for a limited constitutional government. The virtual gala brought together hundreds of NRI supporters from across the country – proof of the breadth of our movement and the strength of our institution.
Virginia James received the WFB Award for Leadership in Supporting Freedom for her commitment to the principles of a free society. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said of Virginia James that she was ready with “her purpose and her wallet”. We hope that you will be inspired by Virginia’s leadership and that you will join it in this spirit of generosity.
When Jim Buckley accepted the WFB Prize for Leadership in Political Thought for his advocacy of federalism, he noted gloomily:
We have become a nation of constitutionally illiterate people. Few Americans understand the extent to which constitutional safeguards are being phased out. So we must remind them of their existence and bring home the urgent need to bring the administrative state under effective constitutional control.
Buckley’s words are a sobering reminder of the immense task that lies ahead – contain the administrative state and fight to preserve our sacred institutions and American values.
He came to the conclusion that he cannot think of any organization that can tackle this challenge better than NRI:
I urge you to focus all of your considerable resources on reminding Americans of the constitutional sources of their blessings and of the utmost seriousness of the present threat. You have your marching orders. God bless you all.
We are humble with his support and hope that you will obey his marching orders by contributing to our year-end fund appeal today.
Our work is more important today than ever before. Thank you for your generous support of our cause.
