Oregon Democratic Governor Kate Brown announced this week that she is extending her declaration of emergency until March, claiming that “these are the darkest days of this pandemic”.
Oregon extends emergency declaration
The declaration expired on January 2nd, but has now been extended for an additional 60 days to March 3rd. The declaration of emergency enables Brown to issue executive orders banning business and closing schools.
Brown defended her decision to extend this by citing a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state.
“With we have nearly 100,000 cases of COVID-19 in Oregon and hospitals and health care workers are reaching their limits, there is no doubt that COVID-19 continues to pose a public health threat,” Brown said in a press release. “We continue to lose too many Oregonians to this deadly disease, including over 100 reported deaths in the past two days.”

‘These are the darkest days of the pandemic
“These are the darkest days of this pandemic,” she added. “And yet hope has come. Starting this week, every time another Oregonian is vaccinated against COVID-19, we’re one step closer to the day we can return to normal life. In the meantime, we must keep our watch. Keep your friends and loved ones safe by continuing to follow health and safety protocols. Wear face covering, avoid gatherings, stay home when you are sick – and together we can fight COVID-19 infections and save lives. “
The press release continued: “The state of emergency is the legal basis for the executive orders issued by the governor to keep Oregonians healthy and safe during this crisis, including their orders regarding the risk level framework that establishes essential health and safety safeguards for Oregon as well as contracts for childcare, schools and universities. With the extension of the state of emergency, these orders remain in force. “

Democratic leaders like Brown have shamelessly used the coronavirus pandemic to exercise as much control as possible over their citizens. It looks like Brown is in no hurry to give up her newfound power over the people of Oregon anytime soon.
