Global COVID-19 cases over 80 million

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – The number of COVID-19 cases worldwide has exceeded 80 million.

Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University reported the brand on Saturday morning after registering 472,000 cases on Christmas Day. The number of deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic worldwide is 1.75 million.

The US is by far the leader among nations in coronavirus disease, reporting nearly 18.8 million as of Saturday. India follows with 10.2 million; Brazil counted 7.45 million. There were more than 330,000 deaths in the US, 190,000 in Brazil and 147,000 in India.

There have likely been many more cases of the coronavirus that were not counted for a variety of reasons, including underreporting, asymptomatic infections, and a lack of collaboration with contact tracers.
