Keir Starmer stated in his New Year’s Message published today that “our best years are yet to come” and “there are reasons to be optimistic” as vaccines are being distributed to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
“Optimistic about the vaccine distribution. Optimistic that we will hold loved ones again and have our freedom. That our economy can grow. Companies can start trading, ”said the Labor leader.
“I believe this can be the best country to grow up in again and the best country to grow old in. And with that hope and vision, I believe our best years are yet to come.”

I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year across the UK. Usually, of course, people all over the country would gather with their friends, families and loved ones. Thinking about what happened and looking forward to everything that is to come. But 2020 has reminded us of how unsafe life can be.
The coronavirus has changed our whole life. Britain has suffered more than almost any other major economy. Too many of our loved ones have lost their lives. Too many good companies have problems. Too many people have lost their jobs. And restrictions, no matter how necessary, were difficult for all of us.
The hidden costs of this pandemic have felt overwhelming at times. People’s mental health has suffered, we have missed each other and some days the pandemic never seems to end.
However, as the New Year begins, there are reasons to be optimistic. Optimistic about the vaccine distribution. Optimistic that we will hold loved ones again and have our freedom. That our economy can grow. Companies can start trading. And we can focus on the task of rebuilding our country.
But until then, it is all our duty to stay safe, take care of our neighbors, and continue the national efforts that have brought us this far. Because when this crisis ends and ends, we will rebuild our country together.
This should be inspired by the bravery and heroism of those who have been on the front lines since the beginning of the pandemic. Our key workers, our caregivers, NHS staff, police officers, those who kept the streets safe, and our supermarkets were stocked at the height of the crisis.
The UK is breaking new ground in the world. And the Labor Party that I lead will focus on making sure that the path is leading to greater prosperity, fairness and opportunity for every nation and region, village, city that makes up our great United Kingdom.
I believe this can again be the best country to grow up in and the best country to grow old in. And with that hope and that vision, I believe our best years are yet to come.
So wherever you are, however you spend this season on behalf of the Labor Party, I wish you a Happy New Year.
