World leaders react to chaos in the US (some slower than others …)

Scott Morrison took his sweet time before embarking on the mayhem of Washington this morning, but don’t expect his message to be revolutionary.

The Washington Capitol was breached for the first time since 1814 – this time by British soldiers, this time by a group of supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump who had been frenzied by constant false claims that his re-election had been stolen from him. The soft light of dawn met tear gas wreaths in the American capital as Australia woke up this morning.

As the hours went on, people wondered where Prime Minister Scott Morrison is. There was no explanation from him or Secretary of State Marise Payne. After an endless silence, he finally managed a pretty lukewarm tweet at 9:40 a.m.:

Very agonizing scenes at the US Congress. We condemn these acts of violence and look forward to a peaceful transfer of government to the newly elected government in the great American democratic tradition.
